Panel Speakers

General information [contribute]

'Planex' Sound Panel wall speakers were manufactured by Bertagni of Argentina for Fisher in 1971.

Thomas Couvenaar (November 25, 2006): When I first started Planex in 1995, I wanted to create a business that would always be able to deliver on its promise of value. Therefore, I personally took responsibility for many parts of the business, ranging from using my own financing, through to developing a reliable distributor network by visiting the distributors myself and getting to know them face-to-face.

I learned early on the importance of customer satisfaction, and how when customers are delighted with the functionality of a product, and then you delight them again with the price and support, then you have a customer who will tell all their friends what a great company Planex is. That's what drives repeat sales and business success. As a result, my background and that of the Company is very much a 'nuts and bolts' approach, with the focus being on product conceptualization, sales, and marketing rather than manufacturing and materials R&D.

Because of this, Planex has evolved into a kind of 'fab-less'company, working closely with our manufacturing partners. In fact we currently work with four of the top five industry Electronics Contract Manufacturing (ECM) companies in Taiwan and China to turn out much of our product range. This gives us a huge advantage over our competitors, who are typically wedded to factories and the financial and problems such fixed assets bring. The flexibility and cost savings we have gained allow us to be a price leader in the market, as well as having unparalleled responsiveness to changes and trends in consumer preference. The result is that Planex is the most profitable major player in our industry.

'Fab-less' means that we can be focused on product concept/development, logistics and marketing. Let's look at these points individually. First, product development. Most of our products are either originally designed or improved in our Tokyo R&D operation. In a commodity industry, there are temptations to cut corners with R&D. However, in Planex, we dedicate about 20% of our workforce and 4% of our revenues to new product development. The result is that we're often at the leading edge of new trends. We developed the first router to handle instant messaging protocols, and the first Compact Flash Ethernet adapter to be certified compliant with Microsoft's PDA standards.

Logistics can be a major competitive advantage, and we've done very well in the execution of our supply chain. For example, we were able to get inventory turns down by 15% from 1.09 months in 2001 to 0.94 months in 2002. We intend to keep working on our stock levels, cutting 10-15% each year in much the same way as some PC manufacturers have been able to do.

Marketing is of course our strong point. This is where my personal background lies, and we are very close to both the major distributors and retailers in Japan (and increasingly overseas) letting us feel the pulse of the consumer market. Some of our closest relationships are with Yodobashi Camera, Bic Camera, PC Depot, and Sofmap as I say, some of the biggest names in the industry. In August 2002 we also launched our own EDI system, to facilitate Internet procurement by these retailers. We plan to put most of our remaining distributors and retail partners on this system in the near future.

Internationally, we have started building a sales and distribution network. We're already in Britain, Italy, Denmark, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia, and have a big push in China planned for the near future. In almost all these countries, the same market factors exist that were present in Japan 5-6 years ago. That is, consumers are paying too much, have a limited range of products to choose from, and .get little or no support. We plan to right that problem. Looking to the future, we are working on strengthening our corporate structure and continuing to pump out innovative, cost-effective products. We have embarked on a long-term recruiting and training program which will make Planex a world-class competitor in corporate solutions as well as basic products. We are bringing in experienced senior managers who will improve our strategic relationships as well as helping us to better understand the needs of corporate IT departments. The result of this, we will start challenging some of the major enterprise vendors on their own turf which should be interesting.
